Alison Malmon, director and founder of Active Minds, said suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students after motor vehicle accidents.
“Send Silence Packing” features 1,100 empty backpacks — each representing the lives of the 1,100 college students lost to suicide each year.
Each bag represents a real person. People are encouraged to stop and read their stories.
“They say a picture’s worth a thousand words,” said Malmon, whose brother, a student at Columbia University, took his own life in 2002 "
